In terms of things in place it doesn’t get much more obvious than this.  Stonehenge of course and whilst I have a series of pictures all showing the relationship (spatial) between various stones, this one is nicely singular. More of Stonehenge soon I hope.

Last night there was talk about experience and place; interaction and belonging. The idea that what we do in a place begins to shape it… or at least our perception thereof. I chased this picture down from the hard drive that I remember well; my son Jo making that stretch of Essex North Sea …all… [Read more…]

Snow field Burnham

The cold brings with it a clarity of course… a physicality that makes landscape sharp… ring like a bell. However it seems to me that if you then strip it down in a photograph to a few key elements of colour, shape and tone the place begins to escape that physicality all over again and… [Read more…]

There are places… and there are times when those places become something unto themselves; they become more than the sum of their parts. There begins to be a point where human becomes nature… and this what I’m after.

Moon over Marsh

marsh moonlight

Out just now on the marsh (11pm) not with the big camera but the small digital thing. Quite still, colourless but with a luminosity that came through the thin cloud and was reflected back off the remains of the snow. The tides have not been high so there are still white patches of snow in… [Read more…]

The more I look at this place at the moment… snow covered, still, wintery with a sound quality that’s soft as warm blanket, I think of it when it’s in its glory, in spring time, all lush, airy and with a waxy yellow green that only walnut can produce. That contrast, that comparison of season… [Read more…]

Mercy will you look at this island. I have seen a few but rarely anything that seems to have such a sense of prospect from the air, such a sense geological jewellery as this. Those cliffs, that little collection of mans work with walls like lain silver thread and such a even plain of grass.… [Read more…]

I don’t want to bring anything on, but there haven’t over the years been many damaged negatives. The good record is not really my doing because when they are with me they are simply stored….that’s all. I do remember this one though, when it came back from somewhere and had been bent double while it… [Read more…]

Some friends are about start work renovating an old castle. This is one of the old windows on the ground floor and though a neglected place, must have been looking like this every Christmas day … in the morning light…for perhaps 50 years. Happy Christmas.

Folly

This folly near my mother’s house must have once been quite a thing. Iron stone solid and commanding the view down the Wey valley. Now it is hemmed in by the oaks and beeches, and coated in ivy and virginia creeper that sprawl through the gaps, in through the windows and cloak it with a… [Read more…]
